Easter Appeal: Water for Upendo

The importance of water for our health cannot be gainsaid. Yet access to clean drinking water remains a mirage for many households in Kiminini. Once upon a time the Kenya government promised that every household will have access to piped water by the year 2000. Well, it is 2014 and there is no tap water here. We continue to wait. The need for safe drinking water is most felt by schools such as

Upendo JuniorImage. Without water, the children question why teachers tell them to “always wash their hands after using the toilet”! Besides washing hands, the school needs water for cooking and drinking. The water is also needed for planned future constructions at the school

Clean water leads to fewer water-borne diseases such as diarrhea, which means fewer missed classes Children (especially girls) often miss class to fetch water for cleaning of classrooms and cooking from Kiminini River. This situation cannot be allowed to continue.
It is with these in mind that Upendo Junior School has embarked on a water project to ensure that we have clean water. For lack of money to drill a borehole, we have began to manually dig a well

Water should be found at about 60 feet underground.

To ensure the safety of the diggers and cleanliness of the water at the end, we will need about 15 culverts (each 4 feet in height), water proof cement, storage tanks, a manually operated water pump and chlorine. Besides labour, these will cost us about Ksh. 200,000/=. (Two hundred thousand shillings).

We are therefore appealing to our friends and well-wishers to help us achieve this target and help ensure the children and staff to have easy access to safe water. Every little helps. Those wishing to donate towards this project should kindly contact the School via email at: upendo.school@gmail.com for more detains.

Ahsante sana!
